The Last Indian Battle in Texas
Closing the Frontier: The Battle of Sierra Diablo
While many believe the frontier was settled much earlier, the final military engagement between the U.S. Cavalry and Native Americans in Texas actually took place as late as 1881. This engagement, known as the Battle of Sierra Diablo, marked the end of an era for the Texas frontier.
The Sierra Diablo Mountains
A group of Apache warriors had been using the rugged Sierra Diablo mountains as a stronghold. In January 1881, Texas Rangers and U.S. Cavalry tracked the group into the mountains. The ensuing battle was short but decisive, effectively ending organized resistance in the region.
The End of an Era
Following this battle, the great expanses of West Texas were finally opened up to large-scale ranching and settlement. The stories of those who lived through these final days of the ‘Wild West’ continue to fascinate and provide a glimpse into a time of profound change.
